Abstract

Elder abuse has recently emerged as social issue, with increasing number of old person. Since it is urgent to develope social program to prevent and cure, it is needs to study about the elder abuse in death.
This study was done in an attempt to further understand the significant problem of abuse in the elderly and improve efforts aimed at intervention and prevention of abuse in nursing.
From the interviews done in Jinju city and rural with 135 people over 60 years old, they had at least one experience of being abused. Used a questionnaire composed of socio-demographic characteristics and four type scales of the elder abuse : emotional/psychological abuse, physical abuse, financial abuse, neglect.
The result of this study can be summarized as follows:
1.The most serious abuse among emotional abuse, physical abuse, financial abuse and neglect was neglect. But physical abuse showed low possibility.
2.The case of the difference of elder abuse according to the financial condition, all of the four types were showed difference. The older who answered that their financial condition was bad were more abused than the older who answered that their financial condition was good.
3.In the difference of elder abuse according to the age, emotional abuse and neglect revealed difference.
4.In case of the difference of elder abuse according to the health condition, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect were showed difference. The healthier they were, the less they were abused, and the weaker they were, the more they were abused.
5.In case of the difference of elder abuse according to the contact degree with offspring, emotional abuse, physical abuse and neglect were showed difference. The less they had chances which met their meeting with offspring, the more they experienced elder abuse.
6.The majority of abusers(45.2%) were the daughters-in-law of the elderly victims, followed by sons(41.2%)
7.6.67% of the abused elders asked help to somebody, but 93.3% of the abused persons did not tried to seek help against the abuse. It means that they have responded passively to abuse and were reluctant to do something to protect themselves.
8.The reasons for showing a very passive attitude were that they felt the abuse was not serious and took the cases as private matters.
